2004 is the bicentennial of Haiti's declaration of independence from France and each of Kimathi Donkor's large-scale, figurative oil paintings explores a different aspect of the traumatic birth of this first, and most beleaguered, of the modern Caribbean island nations.

Kimathi is a former art teacher and a Fine Art graduate of Goldsmiths College who, after a break of several years, began exhibiting again in the 2003 group show, The Jamaican Influence.
