Bettie Morton studied `Art History´ (19th century art, 20th century art and the Renaissance) at Birkbeck College, University of London and worked for 9 years at the Museums and Galleries Commission (now called Resource) as an indemnity Officer with the responsibility of arranging indemnity cover for works of art on loan to temporary exhibitions or on a long-term basis (to enhance specific collections) to non-commercial museums and galleries throughout the UK. This entailed, arranging insurance cover for major blockbuster exhibitions, transport of arts works, valuation (authenticating works of art and liaising with museum curators and exhibition organisers), environmental controls and security. Major venues included, The Royal Academy, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Edinburgh City Art Centre, The Henry More Foundation, The Barbican and many more. Working in a small team of 2 people she handled over 250 applications per year from museums & galleries throughout the UK. In 1999 Bettie Morton started her own business and has since then held a number of exhibitions, several displays and arranged two contemporary art fairs. In December 2001 she opened `the bettie morton gallery´ where high quality contemporary art is sold at affordable prices.
Bettie is an innovative gallery owner with 12 years experience of exhibiting art. She has been the pioneer of the Brixton Open Art Prize, which raised awareness of the wealth of creative talent within this vibrant community. The Brixton Open attracted a lot of press coverage including filming by the BBC1 (26 September 2002). When the BBC was looking for new innovative and challenging work to include in the series `BABYFATHER 11’ they chose work from two young emerging artists from `the bettie morton gallery´. In July 2003 the bettie morton gallery organised the first ever Brixton Contemporary Art Fair - New Origins
